Birthday Girl!

Picture 28
Today our firstborn turned 8. Can you believe that?
We asked Victoria what she wanted for her birthday dinner and she chose Chinese. Well, as usual, I took that idea and ran. We had a variety of chinese food. I moved the kitchen table out of the kitchen & set the coffee table there instead. Then I put the pillows down to sit on. (This was a big hit with the girls.)

The ceiling was adorned with paper lanterns. (These are actually so simple to make! I found super easy instructions online and went to work.)

And what is a chinese dinner without chopsticks? She is really getting good at using them!

After dinner was finished, we sang to her and then dug into that cake. Believe me it wasn't easy....we all ate a little too much of dinner and were getting full really fast.

"What the???" This may be what you are asking. (If you have read the whole way down.) That would be a dragon on her cake. Victoria was born in the Chinese Year of the Dragon. So I thought it was fitting for her birthday cake.

What is a birthday without gifts? I am thinking that this may be her favorite: High School Musical 2 DVD. She also got lots of books and some clothes.

I am amazed at how fast she is growing up! Her personality is starting to resemble a pre-teen...oh, all the emotional stuff...uuugghhh. She is very bright, independent - and convincing. She is alot like me there...a leader who knows what she wants & pretty much knows how to get it. (I know Jennie & Mom are nodding in agreement there...) She loves everyone and tries to make them happy. This is a milestone year for her too! She will be baptized on June 7th and almost the entire family will be there. She is very excited about it. We love her tons and are so grateful to have her in our family.

Remembering them....

Picture 26

Today is Memorial Day. Normally we are celebrating Victoria's birthday, but we still have a couple days to go. I wanted to dedicate today's picture to those who have served our country in the past, those who are now serving & those who want to in the future. Also to their families - who I think are equally needing to be honored. (I hope I don't step on any toes here.)
I am thinking particularly about my very good friend Debbie. Her husband has been overseas for almost a year & he is finally returning home on Wednesday. She has been taking care of her 4 children and her bedridden Grandmother pretty much on her own. Honestly, I don't know how she can keep things together! I truly admire her. I know it has been hard for her but I can honestly say, that I haven't heard a complaint about him being away at all. She knows it's hard and I have a small glimpse of how difficult it is for her, but she has been amazing through it all.
Women and families like her are the backbone of this country. I wanted to say "Thank You." It almost doesn't even seem like a big enough word to use, but it is all I have. Thank you for supporting our soldiers. Thank you for letting your husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, Uncles, Aunts and friends leave - not knowing if they will return - trusting that they are doing their duty and hoping they will make it back ok.
Of course, thank you to all the soldiers who have served in the military forces. I think you are a special breed. It is hard for me to even comprehend all that you have seen and that you still have a strong desire and will to serve. We have you to thank for the freedoms we can enjoy in America. I love our country. I love how we can come together in hard times and be a united people. A prayer for all those families who have lost someone, may you find peace and strength in knowing how much they are appreciated. Thank you for all that you have done.

Planting Seeds

Picture 27:

Yesterday was Memorial Day. Victoria had off of school. We were hoping to be able to go to the zoo for the morning, but it was pouring rain. We decided to plant herb seeds and repot flowers I received for Mother's Day. The girls chose their pot and then their herb. Christianna planted parsley and Victoria planted chives.

That is one thing I miss, not having my own yard and garden. I love planting flowers and all sorts of things. Seriously, I would love to come and help you with your yard or planting. Just ask me!!! I am hoping to teach the girls all about gardening, especially how we can plant herbs, veggies & fruit to actually use. It would be great if they turned out to love it as much as I do. (They do love to help with my parents garden when we visit, especially when it is time to harvest the veggies in the fall.) They had a great time and it made me want to go get more flowers to pot and have on our patio. --But I held back the urge. Instead, we went to visit Chris & see him as he had his obstacle course for motor school. He did awesome & passed!! Now he has a week of long rides to go! (Please pray for him!) We all want him to make it through.

Sundays

Picture 25

For anyone who has been following, I have been doing a picture a day for the month of May...including things that are a part of my life - things I wish that my Grandparents and even parents would have written about...

My picture today represents a huge part of my life. This is the outline for Primary this year. The theme is: I Am A Child of God. Right now I am in our Primary Presidency as the second counselor. I love it! I have always enjoyed being with and teaching the children..aged 3-11. (Tech. 18 months and older....) It is such a wonderful opportunity and blessing to teach them. It always amazes me how much those children understand and learn!

I am so very grateful that we learned about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from 2 wonderful missionaries. I was just about to turn 12 when I was baptized. I sometimes wonder where my life would have been if I hadn't had the gospel. We were Catholic before, went to church every Sunday...but I didn't feel anything for it. It was what we did. Now I have such a strong testimony of the gospel and I see blessings in my life everyday because of it. I can see the Lord's hand in my entire life! Especially that rough year I had in H.S. when I reared off the straight & narrow. A year I don't like to talk about too much. Since then, I got my act together, married a wonderful man for time & eternity and we now have 2 beautiful girls and are an eternal family.

Some people wonder how I can "deal" or "let" Chris be in his profession...knowing that we are an eternal family & this life is not the end, gives me great comfort. Granted, I don't like to think about something happening to him even though it is a very good possibility. Also, he has wanted this for so long - a major dream of his - that I just cannot say "NO." I couldn't live with knowing that I held him back from something he loves. I don't want to be the reason for regret.

I am just so grateful for the gospel. It is my strength and comfort and so much more.

Ahhh, new shoes!

Picture 24
I love new shoes! Lately, I am really getting more into different shoes. I have always had an eye for shoes that were different, "ugly" as my mom would call them.
Normally I would buy the necessities: a black pair & a brown pair...pretty basic. But lately I am really expanding. I attended a shoe party this morning - yes, they even have home parties where you can buy the cutest shoes!
I debated on these - until I just gave in & tried them on. They are sooo comfy! Surprised? I was. I wore them around the house for a little bit & I was hooked. Chris is going to really like them - he really likes it when I am taller. I have also been getting braver with more height & less heel....these are tiny heels...stilletto...my nemeses. I am a klutz - ask anyone. (I fell down 4 steps and fractured my foot for crying out loud! That was when I went visiting teaching too.) But I am prepared to overcome the fear of high heels and what better way then with these cute ones!

Ode to nights!

Picture 23
The evenings are an important time of my day. Particularly after 8. This is the time when the girls are in bed - and on really good nights, are actually asleep. I can sit and do whatever I want! I can read, vegge out in front of the TV, make phone calls, work my business, catch up on laundry or other housework, or just spend time with my husband.
I have even been known to take that time to reward myself with a relaxing foot soak & pedicure - on those really crazy, "I am going to pull out my hair," kind of days. You know what I am talking about!
Even though it is mundane, the nights are a HUGE part of my life & day. Can anyone relate to this?
  • The day is so crazy that you are actually counting down the hours...maybe even minutes & seconds..until the kids are in bed?
  • When your husband arrives home from work - again you have counted that down as well...you are waiting by the door, ready to leave for some "alone" time...and you announce as you are going out the door "You can feed them cereal for dinner. I am out of here."
  • Burnout stage: Your significant other arrives home to find you comatose on the couch as the house is falling in on you and the kids are literally hanging from the ceiling. (Granted, this literal situation hasn't happened to me yet - but some days sure do feel like it!)

Now, not all days are like this...but with the pending summer vacation............Let's just say, I have a bad feeling about more days being like this. I need to adopt a new mantra, "Stay positive, think of the good." (Like school is back in session in about 2 months and I still have my nights to myself.)

She's growing up!

Picture 22 (Thurs.)

I know my post was about Christianna yesterday, but I need to do another one inspired by her. Today we were eating lunch together and we had a very interesting conversation. I really don't know how we got started on the topic - but she started out by telling me that I need to find her a husband. The dialog went something like this....

"Mom, I need you to find me a husband."

"You are too little to have a husband."

"Oh, I know - when I am bigger, like you!"

"When you are bigger, are you going to be a Pampered Chef lady?"

"Yes! And when I go to Chicago with you, my husband will stay home with the kids." (Remember, Pampered Chef National Conference is in Chicago.)

"And while I am there, I can go to the Disney Store to get things for the kids." (As she is talking, she has her hands moving like she is on a task list - in order.)

"But I don't know if I want a baby in my belly...(pause)...but that is the only way to have kids..." (There really wasn't much of a break here to let her know about the idea of adopting.)

"Then when we get back from Chicago, we can pack our things and go to Grandmas house...(pause)...but you have to come too, because I don't know how to get there..."

With her face a little crinkled, like she is thinking hard, she says, "Hmm, you are going to have to live with me."

So I ask her, "So you don't have to go far to visit Grandma?"

"Yes. (Then she says -) I don't want you to be a Grandma."

"Why?"

"Because, you are beautiful....." (Almost like that will change? Nice, huh?)

I really wish that I had recorded this conversation! Already, I have forgotten some things that she said. It was one of those moments that I don't want to forget. I know she was jumping back and forth with things, but it was, seriously, the funniest conversation I have had with her thus far. It is just so hard to believe that she is only 5! She is like a little adult when you sit and have a conversation with her! She is always thinking about what she will do in the future, when she grows up - what she wants her life to be like.

Independence vs. Matching

Picture 21
Here is my dear Christianna & her socks. I had to blog this for future posterity. Christianna has selective independence issues. For example, she likes to dress herself, but needs help with her shoes because "It's too hard."
I am pretty sure that she has only a couple pairs of socks that are her favorite. This pair is at the top of her selection list. As soon as they are back from the wash, they are on her feet. And when she puts them on, she is fully committed! She pulls those things so far up that they are to her knees and her toes look like they are about to pop right through! It is hysterical when she insists on wearing them with shorts or capris - as she is today.
I am actually kinda used to her looking like this. We have a "when we are going into public" rule. Which means that she has to look decent and match if we are leaving the house-mainly if it is somewhere nice or important. For example, the post office does NOT count as one of those places. She will even ask if we are going into public before she dresses for the day. (It helps her decide what is acceptable.) But, when we picked Chris up for lunch today, he saw the socks and reminded her that she was in public...he said it with a grin and a funny look look my way that had "nice" written all over it!

What the...??

It isn't even 9 AM yet & I am all set for my picture of the day! #20

Can you see that right? I have been reading lately. Look closely. That is indeed the same book - kinda. Ever since PTA Conference & heard Shannon Hale speak, I decided to read some of her books. SO I picked up a couple at the BYU bookstore. I finished the first one "The Goose Girl" just after dinner last night. So I wanted to get started on the next one "Enna Burning." As I was getting snuggled into bed & opened my next book, very eager to read it, as I did the last...I was severely confused! Why does this book have a forward about Palestine history? What are they talking about...it was translated into English by so & so? WHAT?? I reread the book flap and sure enough, it was supposed to be about a girl, her brother & a gift of making fire... Upon further examination of this book, I took a look at the title page. Hidden within the cover of "Enna Burning" was a different book! Now it wasn't that it was just the wrong paper sleeve...the hardback cover was also wrong and the actual pages inside go with a book called "I Saw Ramillah." Can you believe that?

To say the least, I was a bit disappointed. I called the bookstore this morning to explain & that was the first time they ever heard this one! Lucky me. So I have to wait until I can get back down to Provo or until my brother-in-law comes to visit again & have him exchange it for me. I really want to read it! I guess it may be best for now, I can get things back in order around here. You see, the thing about me is that once I start a book, I have to keep reading it until it is done. Almost everything else is put on the back burner. I do manage to make sure everyone eats 3 meals a day (even if it is just cereal) and that they have clean clothes to wear. (That may shed a little light as to why Chris was doing laundry yesterday...I was really going to do it...he just beat me to it.) But since this book is a continuing story from a character in the first book, I really want to read it. Oh well....such is life. How is your day panning out?

Monday, May 19, 2008

There is nothing sexier than a man doing the laundry!

Picture 19:

Except - maybe - when he's doing the dishes.

I just wanted to brag a little....since this truly is a rare occasion. Chris has been on top of the laundry all day! I think it is because he was "low" on a few items, but honestly, the reason doesn't matter to me. I will take all the help I can get and I truly appreciate it - like you wouldn't believe! And a little more needs to be said.
I know alot of you heard about my Mother's Day. Well, tonight I finally got that Mother's Day dinner I was looking forward to. Better late than never, I guess! It was a delicious meal of stromboli. I recommend it to anyone, especially those who have no idea what it is! All you native westerners - I am talking to you!!

Good Mornings

Picture 18:

Have you ever just had a good morning? And not just you - but everyone, under the same roof have a good morning at the very same time? It definately is a rare thing and so rare, that I had to write about it. This beautiful Sunday morning we all woke up about the same time...around 9 am. Now for those that know us and more especially Christianna, you know that it is HUGE! (She is up by 7:30 practically every day.)

We gathered together on our bed and had our morning scripture reading and then something awesome happened! I started to talk about our family and began with stories about the girls' Great-Grandparents. I told them about the first time I ever met my Grandpa Roscoe Call. He was telling me and my cousin John about his special arrowhead. It was on a string around his neck. He was telling us how he used it to fight off someone... Now, he was the type that loved to tell stories and very often, you had to really search his eyes to know if it was true or just another one of his tall tales, and even then - it was hard to tell! He was a great person. He passed away about 6 1/2 years ago and I think of him so very often. I wish that the girls had had a chance to meet him here on earth. They will just have to wait until we meet him again at Jesus' feet. I also told them a little about Grandma Call's life. The girls have only known her out of all their Great-Grandparents. She is such a strong woman and example to me. I told them how she raised her 6 girls on her own for years after her first husband left. We talked about her second husband, Leon Maher. He later passed when I was around 1 year old. Then, some years after that, she married Grandpa Call. He was the one I really knew and loved dearly.

I then talked about my Grandma & Grandpa Lyndaker. I told them about one time, in particular, that I remember. I don't even think I was very old either. We were in New York for a family reunion at their camp. Grandpa sat down with all the grandkids, each with a plate of spaghetti, a fork & spoon. Then he taught all of us how to eat the spaghetti with that fork & spoon. I don't remember how I did, but that memory still makes me smile. I don't have that many memories with him, but I am glad I have that good one. He died when I was in fifth grade. That is a year I will never forget. He was diagnosed with lung cancer and everytime he had a turn for the worst, I was taken out of school and we drove the almost 4 hours north to the hosptal in New York. The image of him in the hospital, his body whithering away from cancer, will always be with me. I am glad that I have some good memories to look back on.

Now, I didn't really go into that with the girls today since we were having a time of good memories. After we talked about the fun stories, we went out to the living room and knelt in family prayer. It truly was a glorious morning! Around 5 PM this evening, in honor of my Grandpa Lyndaker, we ate spaghetti for dinner and Chris & I taught Victoria & Christianna how to eat it with a fork and spoon.

Date Night

Picture 17:
Today Chris & I enjoyed a night escape. We had a busy day and were able to find a sitter very last minute -Thank You KK!! We actually got a call from a friend who had 2 tickets to a performance, Feelin' Groovy. She couldn't make it & offered them to us. Thank you Kristin!! We had an awesome time. It was mainly music from the 60's..seriously right up my ally. We both enjoyed it - we sang a little, danced a little...
Whenever I go to a performance, it brings out the desire to get into performing arts again...I only just did school plays - but I loved it! With Chris's busy schedule, it is a rare occassion to find time together to go out. We were even able to just talk. Normally the radio is on in the car & I am belting it out...but this time, no radio - just the two of us. I wouldn't trade that for anything.

The spoils of PTA conference!!

PTA ROCKS!!! You heard that right! I am one of those PTA parents. But I am not the crazy psycho-type. I just returned from a 2 day PTA conference that was in Provo. I had a great time! A group of fabulous ladies & 2 dedicated fellas went from our elementary school. As you can see, you get alot of "information." I say it that way, because you get some good info & -sorry to say it - you get some junk too. Plus side - fabulous samples! Especially as you go around the different fundraiser companies. If you are looking for a sugar or chocolate fix, you are definately in the right place! Many baked cookies, many different kinds of chocolate bars & candies. Today I got a packet of apple slices & a Creamy! It was banana flavored - so I think I did alot better with the fruits.... Yum, yum, yum...
I had many different classes to go to as well. I am going to be the Reflections Chair for the next school year & I am so excited to do it! I remember entering reflections when I was in school. (Secretly, I wish I could submit stuff of my own now.) Sadly, I can not - but there is always the State Fair! --Sidenote: I am actually planning on submitting photographs I have taken this year @ the fair.
My very last class was AWESOME! I heard Chris Waddell speak. He is a paralympic medalist. He broke his back in a skiing accident and was back on the slopes within a year! His story is such an inspiring one! I have included a link to his website & I encourage all of you to take a gander & check it out! www.one-revolution.com
Well, now I need to go through all this stuff & weed out the good stuff! Wish me luck, I'm going in!

Another trip to the school...

Victoria has a knack for "needing" things during school hours. On many occassions, I have had to bring something to her in school. This happened a few days ago...she called and asked if I could bring her a dry: shirt, pants, pair of underware & socks. (I assumed that she needed dry shoes as well.) She had been playing during recess and had fallen in a pile of water-you can see the water and mud marks on her!

I have also had to make other trips for dry clothes before! More "falling" or "sliding" into water and snow. Can she not see the puddles or what??? Other trips have been for needed "special medicine." You know what that is? EMERGENC!!! That fizzy drink! She takes it when she is getting stuffy or a sore throat. It is just so funny that she refers to it as special medicine. Got to love her!

Celebrating Chris!

Today is Chris's birthday. A whopping 32! I know it's not that old - but I do find comfort in him being older & reaching each decade milestone first. I am very grateful to have him in my life. Not many of you may know this - but, he is actually a pretty funny guy. Granted, he doesn't always catch on to my jokes, but that's ok. He seems the strong silent type - WAY not how it is!! Unless you are breaking the law & he has to take the neccessary actions against you, you will see his strong, serious side - (if you fall under that category...I am very sorry. But you shouldn't be bad anyway..) I have told many that, even I, would not want to be pulled over by that man!

Which makes me think..maybe I should share things you don't know about him. Wouldn't that be fun?
  • One night we were playing Cranium & he could not guess the picture I was drawing for "Don't cry over spilled milk." Turns out - he never EVER heard that phrase before.
  • When we are in restaurants -or any place really - he runs through "what if" scenarios to test my knowledge and see if I would survive or not...ex: crazies enter w/ guns...what do you do? He actually threw one at me when we were driving somewhere once...in case we were boxed in by cars on all sides & those crazies appeared again...which car would I ram to get away? (Fun huh? What would you do?)
  • He is an ice cream-aholic! I am not even kidding about this. He probably has 3+ servings each time in a huge bowl. (Almost every night too...) He has been known to take one of my mixing bowls for this...then he adds: marshmellows, the occasional oreos- or other cookie type item, fudge or chocolate syrup, sprinkles...and "sprinkles" seems like a little - oh no! He loads them on like there is no tomorrow! Makes you wonder how he isn't a fatty huh?
  • He is an apple beer junkie.
  • He is a hothead.
  • Deep down, he really does like being outnumbered by the females in the house. What would he do without his girls? (I'll tell ya....he would be very lonely, depressed - since we bring so much sunshine & laughter in the house - & starving. :-)
  • He doesn't like to read that much - with the exception to the newspaper and the current Harley Davidson catalog. It makes him tired, so he says....
  • He is desperately wanting to get his hands on a WII and all the accessories available. Maybe someday, honey!
  • He loves the song "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" by Kenny Chesney. It is the programmed ring on his phone for when I call or message him. Funny thing though...he doesn't have -or ever had, in fact, any type of a tractor! Plus, tractors aren't really a turn on for me.
  • He takes up most of the closet space in our bedroom closets. He also has at least 1 tote worth of old t-shirts from various places & H. S. sports.
  • I can't give him a back rub because he is so fidgety & super ticklish! WARNING!!! Do not try to tickle him, you will most likely end up in a wrist lock & laying on the floor before you can count to 2! Believe me - you don't want to test this theory...ask Bruce. He got a little taste of it.
  • He loves to run!
  • He gets hit on at work - very often too! As a matter of fact...one night while at the Delta Center, he was given a picture that was found in a cubicle area...there were multiple copies throughout that area too! Turns out that the ladies there had someone take the picture, make copies, & distribute them to all those interested. So I married a hottie!! SCORE! As a result of the many admirers, he has broken many hearts. He has even had ladies ask how serious our relationship is, once they find out he's married. THE NERVE!
  • He loves me, Victoria, Christianna & our families. What more could you ask for in a guy!
I love you honey! xoxox Happy Birthday!!

Help Whip Cancer

Today I am dedicating my picture of the day to a wonderful cause! The month of May is one of my favorites with Pampered Chef. This is our special Help Whip Cancer month. This is a very special cause for me. My Aunt is a breast cancer survivor. I know many people who have been affected by breast cancer, either themselves, friends, or loved ones and not everyone is a survivor.

Last year my fundraiser alone raised over $150.00 towards research. Over all, Pampered Chef has helped to raise over 5 million! I would like to invite everyone to check out my website and help me raise even more this year! Up to 25% of the sales will go to The American Cancer Society. Plus, for every pink item that is ordered, $1 will go to to The American Cancer Society. (If you go online to order, enter in my name as the host so I know to add it to the fundraiser.) You can also call or email me if you would like to order.

If you are in the Salt Lake area, you can even attend the special fundraiser show I am having. It will be on Tues. May 27th. (You can contact me though my website for more information. There is a link to the right...)

Thank you for reading this post - I know it isn't about my crazy kids...but in a way it is. I hope that when they are older, they don't have to even worry about getting breast cancer. I hope that there is a cure.

Boxes, boxes & more boxes!!

I love getting boxes! Some are small & some are larger....but most of them have the most awesome stuff inside!

Since starting my Pampered Chef business, I have received many. I just got an order in that I am using for gifts/bartering for services provided.

This actually contains things for 2 dear friends of mine. In January they took turns taking care of my girls when I attended a Leadership Conference in Cincinatti, OH. I was away for a few days and I knew that I didn't have to worry about them at all. Liz - a special thanks to! The night I returned, I went to pick them up & Victoria had just gotten sick while sleeping in bed...I have just a few words about this: purple grape juice & lots of cookies. Luckily, it didn't get on Christianna, who was sleeping right next to her or wake her up! I am glad to say that it came out of her clothes & stuffed animal.

Back to the boxes. I have received paperwork, replacement parts & FREE PRODUCTS!! The most exciting box I have received was the new cookware set that I earned FREE through a promotion!! WAHOO! I also earn the new products every season. I just love Pampered Chef products and the best way to get them is free. Am I right, or what??

Now that I have put in a huge plug for my business....feel free to check out my website! And prepare yourselves for my blog tomorrow...I just figured out what it will be about!!

Happy Mother's Day!

Today is Mother's Day - Sun. May 11th. To be honest, there were many times that it wasn't the best day for me. But I am trying to stop focusing on that. Let's say that it was a hard one, including one of the worst power struggles yet with my sweet youngest child. Chris wasn't available to help either for those rough moments.
So, it is time to focus on the good today!
This morning, Chris actually didn't sleep in long! He woke up and made me breakfast. So I had a fabulous egg breakfast with a small bowl of fresh strawberries. YUMMY!! Then Victoria presented the Mother's Day card she made me at school. Isn't it cute? She also wrote me a poem:
Mom I Love you like a flower
Maybe you will get the power
Someday you will sing in the shower
P.S. Roses are red violets are blue
candy is sweet and so are you
Love you mom from Victoria
Happy Mother's Day
(She said that the only other word she could think of that rhymed with power - was shower! And I actually do have the power to sing in the shower! I do that alot actually & that is somwthing that the girls do too - but they sing much louder! Even when I have guests over, we can hear them out in the livingroom.)
Christianna doesn't write yet, but I got a bunch of "Happy Mother's Day" hugs and kisses.

Another highlight of today was Primary. I am the 2nd Counselor in our Primary Presidency. We were a little shorthanded as our first counselor was out of town. But that was fine - we have done handled that before. Well, today we were missing the teachers for the Sunbeam class - that is the 3 year olds. I went on a search for the sub - but she was no where to be found. So I ended up teaching them! I actually missed being a Primary teacher! Granted, it is a little difficult to take a quick 10 seconds to go over the lesson before you teach it, but it was wonderful. The children were so sweet and as always, a joy. We learned about our bodies and how we need to keep them clean and healthy. One little boy taught us how important it is to not eat too much sugar and to make sure we brush our teeth to make sure we get all the "sugar bugs" off! He is so adorable. Being with them was one of the best parts of Mother's Day for me. I was able to forget about the things bothering me and just enjoy being with them. Then, all the children sang a Mother's Day medley during church. Then after one of the talks, the choir sang as well. I had a tiny solo. I actually really love to sing! But I still get nervous every time & I can feel my knees shaking....but don't tell anyone.
Happy Mother's Day to all of you! I hope you had a fabulous day!!

Outings with my girls..

Let's face it. Husbands sometimes work alot - especially mine. Many times just the girls are together and finding different things to do can be challenging. We have had many outings.

  • We have been to the zoo so many times that we have the entire layout memorized & could probably direct anyone to the nearest exit in case of a wild animal escape. (Christianna insists on getting a map every time we go! And yes, animals have escaped - last year one of the wolves got out! We were not there that day to help, I am sure we were missed...)

  • We will go down to the Gateway - an open outdoor shopping mall - and walk around. In the summer the girls like to play in the huge fountain there. It is actually level with the sidewalk - so no real swimming is possible. They have different water shows w/ & w/out music & kids just run under the falling water. Summer is almost here, so that will be something we do soon....they actually asked when we went a month ago & it was pretty chilly! (Little Crazies!)

  • Bike rides together are a frequent activity. A way to get out of the house and have some "quieter" time.

  • Today we went to the Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake. It was the first time we have ever been there & we loved it! So many beautiful flowers & plants. They even have this great program for kids. They can check out a backpack that has different activities in it, a field guide for things we can see there, and even a pair of binoculars! The coi fish were a big hit with the girls. We even went into the mountain area behind the gardens and hiked a bit! We were on a trail for just over an hour and it looped around a rather large hill - mountain...whatever you want to call it. But they did awesome. I was very proud of them - and to think of it, there was hardly any whining! Just the occasional - "I'm hungry" from Christianna...it was close to lunch & that girl could seriously eat all day if I let her! We ended up getting a membership so we can also go there as often as we want.

Even though I get a little frazzled when it is just the girls sometimes, it is great when we can do something together without the arguing, of course. (Besides, I think Chirs would have whined a little during the hike.) We were free of any schedule and could just do what we wanted & take as long as we needed. That is relaxation in it's truest sense.

My Mom

About my Mom (pictured here with another great lady - my Grandma)

1. What is your funniest memory of Mom?

  • It is hard to pick the funniest...but this one comes to mind. One night, during the cold winter in Pennsylvania, we were returning home w/ some groceries. I remember holding some milk as we were carrying it into the house. You see, every winter, our driveway normally turned into an ice track. We would park a little farther away from the house in the driveway - before it sloped down a little more... Anyways, I was carrying a gallon of milk & totally wiped out! I feel hard right down, lost the milk & it started gushing everywhere. My mom turned around at the sound of me falling and continued to hysterically laugh at me. For awhile too! Never did ask if I was ok. Talking about it now - it is funny. We have adopted that "tough love" attitude with our children. When they fall or get a little hurt - we laugh too! Mainly so they learn to laugh things off & not get hysterical with each little owie. We know the difference of a major injury vs. a small boo boo based on the cry. (I just don't want to sound like a bad parent.)

2. What lesson that she taught you stands out?

  • To drive really fast past big trucks. (This one needs to be explained. Many, many moons ago our family was traveling on the highway - I think we were returning home from New York - for some reason our family of 6 was split between 2 cars. I was traveling with my mom in the front passenger seat. At one point we were passing a large trailer truck and the driver did not see us passing - so he preceeded to get into our lane. And, still didn't notice, even when we were run off the road! I was a little freaked out & as soon as we stopped, she looked at me and said "You could have just been beheaded!" -THANKS MOM! So ever since, I have this urge to fly past truckers w/ great speed. Do you think a cop would let me off for that if I was caught speeding by?

3. What is your favorite characteristic or personality trait about Mom?

  • She is a courageous, stubborn and determined woman. (May seem like the same thing...) When she has it in her mind to do something - she does it! Also, she passed a huge milestone last year! It was overcoming her ginormous fear of heights - at least for the rock climbing she did that day. Who knows if she will ever do it again, but she tried it once & I was so proud of her.

  • Her faith - she has taught me alot about faith. She had faith when I reared off the beaten path those years ago, and since then through the many things I have experienced in my life. I know that things will work out for me as they are supposed to. I have faith that, as long as I am doing all I can to do the right things in life, things will be ok.

4. What do you see in yourself that came from her, physically or in your personality?

  • This is kind of a hard one! Ever since I was little, I was referred to as "Little Ron." We both like artsy fartsy stuff, painting, creating etc...she likes sewing alot & I do that for neccessity. I am also starting to acquire the little grey hairs & the crinkle forehead spot - right between the eyebrows....you know what I am talking about mom...looks kinda like this: \ /

  • Also, there are those times when I am frustated with the girls & I throw out one of those famous quotes that you heard as a kid... and say to yourself - I am turning into my mother! So far I haven't used the "I brought you into this world, I can take you out!" But we aren't at the teenage years yet.

5. List as many things as possible that she has done for you.

  • Encouraged my ideas, thoughts, plans

  • Loved me no matter what

  • Taught me what unconditional love is

  • Gave me fabulous art lessons when I was a teen

  • Let me use the "box" car when I needed to go to work or anywhere really

  • Invited the missionaries over to teach us about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

  • Been a great Grandma to the girls and is willing to take them for periods of time when we go somewhere

  • She was the best personal driver for all the sporting activities, plays & other school activities we were involved in. She would even go to the cemetary with me when I would have to play the echo of taps for memorial days & other things. (Come on people - I was just the echo - down the hill, where no one could even see me...)

  • A great Cheerleader! I don't think she ever missed a game or performance!

  • Instilled a great love for Holiday decorating - especially Christmas. (We have at least 6 totes of decorations just for Christmas.)

  • Taught me the "blessings" of being a girl. - That was the most embarrassing moment of my life!

  • She gives me advice - to use or not - when I am having a problem.

  • She laughs at my hardships with my own girls and helps me see things in a different light.

  • She is just a great lady & I am so glad that she's my mom.

I know that there are many more things that she has taught me and there are also many more fun memories with her. But this has been a great thing for me to think about all those things! I love you Mom! Happy Mother's Day!!!

Sports - so it begins...

I should have posted this yesterday, but - let's just say, it was a day - My picture for Thurs. involves the activities our kids like to do. We put the girls in a baseball group to see if it was something they liked or not. I am not sure why I thought they wouldn't enjoy it...they are my children after all. A couple of mom's from our ward put a group together so the kids can learn the basics without the large costs of a league. So, for just $6 per kid and 1 night per week - it has proven definatley worth it!

We practice together at home occasionally & Victoria is really picking it up quickly. She is throwing great & boy, does that girl have a mean stance at the plate! (Her arms are at perfect form...I am so proud...sniff, sniff.) Christianna is doing great as well, she also has a fabulous throwing arm and when she can get a piece of the ball - she not too bad at hitting. They actually scare me a little when I am pitching to them. That is mostly now, after Victoria almost line drived me.

I see that the activities are just getting started. The girls also like to take swimming lessons and would like to do many other things - dance, gymnastics, etc...but I am really going slow to put them in alot. Not just because of my schedule and sanity, I don't want to be one of those crazy mom's who are running from one thing to the next all the time! Granted, I feel like that somedays already, but it could be so much worse. Plus, too many activities take them away from the family time we like to have together. So for now, we'll do the baseball take family bike rides and play together outside.

Is it wrong to make them wait until they can drive to their own stuff before I have them in alot of activities??? JUST KIDDING!

Have you been to the Dollar Store?

I am sure that many, many years ago - there were stores like this, only a little better. Things were even cheaper than a dollar...penny candy - etc. With prices rising everywhere, it is good to know that I can still find great deals for the things I need at the dollar store. I definately frequent our local All-A-Dollar for more than you know. Maybe you don't realize all the bargains that are available, so I will fill you in on some of my favorites.

Within the past I year, I have bought:
  • super glue (pack of 3) great for the many quick fixes that are a direct result from children touching things they shouldn't or just goofing off
  • batteries (fab. for the kids toys and they last just as long) - more recently found AAA size perfect for the arm band radio I like to listen to when I go riding
  • brownie mix
  • storage containers
  • litte police men toys (Chris likes to hand out when he does presentations & stuff)
  • party plates & supplies, tons of things for a gift bag (including the bag)
  • super cute hair stuff for the girls
  • hair brushes
  • tooth brushes (the cute kid ones that suction cup to the sink, wall, mirror, or any other place kids can think of)
  • a pregnancy test - sorry everyone-it was negative (so I know they work, because I wasn't pregnant :-)
  • movie theater candy (it is actually cheaper @ Walmart, but for the convenience of close, it works for us)
  • scrapbooking supplies - glue tape dispensers, cute stickers, paper
  • home decorations -which brings me to the pictures.

The floral pattern on the wall in the girls room were actually wall stickers from the Dollar store! I love the different ones because they are NOT permanent. I can reposition/reuse them and they don't damage the walls. Perfect for someone who likes to change it up every once in awhile but is limited due to the fact of apartment "rules". I have actually used cute butterfly stickers on the girls bathroom walls.

I know that there is just about everything there. So next time you are driving by, don't be afraid of low prices, stop in and see all that the Dollar store has to offer. I am sure you will find something you need.

Oh the joys of modern convenience!

Picture of the day: The good ol' washer & dryer. I have come to appreciate this dynamic duo even more the past couple of months. Last month we were without our dryer for a few weeks. Normally I will do all the laundry Wednesday and 2 small loads on Saturday - if needed. When our dryer went out, I had to wash 1 load at a time & hang them on bars to dry. At that time, it was so stinkin' cold that it took almost 2 days to dry! A couple times I got sick of the waiting dirty laundry, that I drove to the laundromat to dry it. (Not fun with the girls since it is super boring! But they were able to entertain themselves for a little bit as they scoured the floor for dropped change. A trait - talent even, that they have from the Grandpa Fairall.)

Over $20 in quarters later - and over $100 in service fees & a part - we have the dryer fixed. I need to express my appreciation for these two. "Thanks for all the years of service you have given our little family. You have been there through accidents, sickness (bless you for that) & health. I am very glad that I don't have to go beat our clothing on rocks in the river and that you make one chore a little easier for me."

My Bike

This is my bike. It may seem a little mundane, but I am so glad to have it. With the rising gas prices, it is a way for me to take my daughter to school - she rides her own of course. Or run short errands - post office or to the store down the road for a few things. The weather is finally cooperating too..except for the expected strom on Wed. (Luckily they are NOT calling for snow this time.)

I also like to take long rides by myself. It is a time for me to think, without the "Mommy, I need this" - or - "Mommy, can I have_____" Not to mention the great exercise I get. I am getting better at taking harder routes so it is a real workout. We also take family rides (definately falls under the "not a workout" category) which is fabulous family time w/out the TV. I am so glad that the girls love to be outside doing things. They love the sporty, active things we do. Just like me! (Even though my current physique may not support that. I am trying.)

'Ode to Relaxation

Sunday: Today's picture represents some "me" time. My spa pass - one of the best gifts I ever received from my husband. Now, I don't know what I would do with out it! Whenever I am feeling like I need a little pick-me-up, I head to the spa to get a manicure, pedicure, or the occassional facial. I haven't had a massage yet, but I hear they are fabulous. I also took some time yesterday to get my mangy hair cut. OK, it didn't look bad, but it was in dire need of a trim. I took off at least 4 inches and believe me, I had no idea how long it had grown! Now it is so much faster to wash & style, especially if I am straightening it. And it feels fabulous! So to all you hard, over worked Mom's & ladies everywhere - take time for yourself. You need to refuel every once in awhile in order to keep helping others the best you can.

Happy Birthday Jennie!!!

Today is Jennie's birthday! She has 1 more year until she joins the 30's club. (My mom had major denial issues & was 29 for YEARS so I am hoping that Jennie doesn't have that same problem.) So, I decided to dedicate today's picture to her. Now, being true to my procrastinating self, I mailed out her card & gift today. See? There I am at the post office. (Since I am so savy with the photo software, I was able to take off her address...sorry all you stalkers. She's taken anyway. ) Actually, I need to give myself credit here....normally I get birthday/anniversary etc. items out at least a week late, if at all - so this is an amazing thing!!! WAHOO! So that brings me to the reason I chose this as my theme today. With our families growing and expanding, it is super hard to keep everything together. I must hand it to my little sister, Crystal - she even mails out Easter & St. Patty's Day cards, not to mention the major holidays! (Maybe I can't justify it - but I'll sure try!)

But family is important & I am so grateful that we have such a close relationship. If we don't chat on Yahoo messenger every day - I seriously have withdraw issues. I don't know what to do with myself. So, here's to family, sisters and keeping up with everything - boy do I have stories of the good ol' days...maybe I'll share some of those another time.

Check-Up Time

Well, this afternoon we had Dr. appointments. Christianna had to get her Kindergarten Exam, which included more shots. Victoria went thinking she was good - but they sprang a Chickenpox booster on her so they both were blessed with them...of course I am referring to the awesome band aids. Victoria didn't even really notice getting it...but Christianna sure did - all 4! But after a few tears, she was good as new. They are both proud of their "war wounds" and loved posing for this picture. I was really wishing that I had the camera at the Dr's office. They both had to put on these cute gowns - you know, the ones that your butt hangs out of... They were sitting by each other on the exam table and just goofing off & laughing so hard! I couldn't help but laugh with them. I am thinking everyone in the office could hear them since the Dr. commented on the fun they were having. I bet it was refreshing to hear laughter there. So many little kids, babies...shots...need I say more???
My sister also challenged me to do a picture a day for the month of May....this is the one for me! The challenge is a way to record daily life. "What do you wish your mother and grandmother could have taken pictures of when they were in your time of life? What do you want to remember when you are in their time of life? What makes you smile? What frustrates you? How is your home laid out? How about pictures of your daily routine? This doesn't have to be about making life look glamorous..."

May 1: Welcoming in the...SNOW??

You heard it here folks! We woke up this morning to snow falling. It was snowing a bit last night, but it was still April. So, I could deal with that...but come on, it is May! Evidently there is a cold front currently over us, but there is hope on the horizon! By Monday (only 4 days away) it should be back up to the 70's. I am hoping that this is the last time it dips back down to snowy weather before summer is here. We have been on this emotional seasonal roller coaster for a month. I guess I can count my blessings...1: we haven't had to turn on the A/C yet-nor do we need the heat on, 2: the snow boots were not stored away with the winter things (which gave the girls another reason to wear them & made me feel better about how much they cost vs. the amount they are worn before they outgrow them), 3: don't have to shave my legs everyday to wear capri pants, 4: we aren't in a home yet, so no flower or garden plant fatalities, 5: the winter decorations on the girls bedroom windows don't look that out-of-place, and 6: it keeps down the awful allergy symptoms that half of the family is suffering from.
